Drinking cold water especially when the temperatures are high is enjoyable; in fact, you get to cool your body so fast.
However, the joy you feel during this moment may be accompanied by serious health hazards that you should know about.
So why should we stop or limit the occasions of drinking ice cold water? Here are three major reasons:
1. Cold water makes it hard for the body to break down fats
Drinking cold water after consuming fatty meals is dangerous for the well being of our body. The fats that are deposited on our bodies after eating need higher temperatures to be broken down during digestion.
Cold water after meals solidifies these fats making it hard for the body to break them down to healthier forms.
2. Cold water exposes your body to flu and other cold-related diseases
The body has an optimum temperature under which it functions effectively.
However, when we drink ice cold water in excess, the optimum temperature with which the body functions is lowered which risks the body of catching flu or cold-related diseases such as pneumonia.
Drinking ice cold water can also cause shrinking and clogging of the blood vessels and this normally raises the blood pressure.
3. Cold water hinders digestion
Digestion of ingested foods require slightly high temperatures to be effective. When we take cold water, we lower the temperature of the stomach by significant degrees.
This denies the digestive system the energy it requires to digest these foods. It instead works on regulating the temperature of the cold drink.
Nutritionists advise that we take warm water as it fastens digestion by activating enzymes, hydrate the body and improves the body's natural detoxification by purifying the blood.
